THE STORY

Where do the best ideas come from?

Sometimes they spark when you are lying on the floor, completely exhausted with no gas left in the tank.

At least, this was where SkipGrips founder Benjamin Higgs found himself when he had a burst of inspiration for a product never before seen on the fitness market.

Out of breath from a workout, he adjusted focus to see a skipping rope close by a hand grip.

“It was literally like a light bulb came on,” Higgs recalls, and he quickly paired the two apparatus together to see how they would work in tandem.

The result blew him away, and he knew it was a product that should be experienced by others.

A longtime health and fitness enthusiast, Ben had multiple injuries to his left side during youth and always battled to rehabilitate fully. "If we were engrained with breathwork, footwork and symmetry of grip strength during our youth, the standard of human physique would be a lot happier with more free hospital beds!"

His fascination with how things work led to a Bachelor degree in Applied Science and a 20-year career as a marine engineer.

Spending long stints on boats comes with a set of unique challenges, including how to exercise efficiently with limited space.

Not only do SkipGrips combine strength and conditioning movements, they also draw on Higgsy's interest in continuous improvement and mind-body connection.

While developing the product, he was studying thermodynamics and applied mechanics while training and practicing breathwork in his free time. He has utilized these concepts in the ways SkipGrips can be used.

“Breathwork is the key for efficient exercise, and building grip strength symmetrically with the range of motion while skipping, creates powerful energy within your arms to build the strength that helps to protect ourselves” Higgs says.

“Applying breathwork technique with the gripping cycle, all while skipping, gives a really fun mind-body experience.”

Higgs initially used himself as the test subject when trialing early prototypes. He found the equipment met more health objectives than he was expecting.

He experienced newfound strength in forearm muscles that had previously been under-used which had an on-flow effect on his performance in boxing training.
